When you start getting into a sport or a new hobby, it is a great idea to know all the small details, no matter how trivial it may seem. This is because you never know when details like this might come in handy. And if you are looking forward to keeping up to date with the game of ping pong, it is never too early to start! You might not think of it as too important, but facts like the dimensions of a ping pong ball, the material used for the ball, materials used for the ping-pong paddles and the table are questions a lot of professionals know the answers to, that too right at the tip of their tongues!
Dimensions of a ping pong ball
Ever since the game gained popularity in the 1800s, the search for the ideal ping pong ball has been on. While many different materials had been tried and tested, the celluloid balls were most loved. This was an observation found in the 1900s, and we are only getting better now! Later, in 2011, the ITTF pushed the use of plastic balls. These plastic balls had to be either white or orange in color. The standard dimensions of a ping-pong ball are 1.57 inches diameter, which is the same as 4cm or 40mm. Ping pong balls with 38mm diameter are also used but are not as popular as the 40mm ones. The regular ping pong ball weighs about 2.7 grams to be exact.
About the ping pong paddle –
To meet regulations criteria, the paddle must be made of laminated wood. The paddle should have a rubber coating on one or both sides. The thickness of the paddle should be made up of 85% natural wood. Balsa, Limba and Cypress woods are often used for these purposes. The dimensions of the ping pong paddle must be 17 centimetres long (which is about 6.7 inches) and 15 centimetres wide (which is about 5.9 inches). It is possible to have different sponges and rubber paddings on the two sides of the paddle, giving a lot of scope to customisation. The type of surface once chooses sets the tone for the game and dictates the speed and spin of the ping pong ball.
The ping pong table –
The table must be rectangular in shape which is supposed to be 2.74 metres long and 1.525 metres wide. In feet, the dimensions come up to be 9 feet long and 5 feet wide. The table should be 76 cm above the floor. In feet, it turns out to be 2.5 feet above the ground.
The ping pong table can be made out of many different materials, but what needs to be paid attention to is the quality of bounce the material used provides. The ideal material would be one which provides a abounce of approximately 23 cm or 9.1 inches, when a ball is dropped from a height of 30cm. Another specification is that the colour of the table should be a dark matte hue. The table must have white markings which outline the border of the table and also divide the table into two. These white markings should be 2cm thick.
Fact like these help a lot when you want to be updated with the intricacies of a sport. It is a good idea to polish up on this knowledge and keep an eye out for any new changes in the official dimensions of a ping pong ball, the ping pong paddle or even the ping pong tables!
